The Key Changes to Make to Your Instagram Bio to Attract More Families

By: Dot & Stripe
Let’s talk about your Instagram bio, because this is one of those things that feels small but can make a really big difference.
Your bio is often the first proper stop for parents. They might see one of your Reels, or someone might tag you in a local post, and then they click through to your profile. And in that moment, they are deciding very quickly whether to stay, follow, click your link or move on.
So if you are putting time into Instagram but not seeing it turn into enquiries or bookings, your bio is one of the first places I would look.
Instagram isn’t just about posting anymore. It’s about what happens when someone lands on your profile. And your bio is doing a lot more work than most people realise.
What is your Instagram bio?
Your Instagram bio is the small section at the top of your profile that explains who you are and what you do. It’s the bit under your name, next to your profile photo, before anyone scrolls or clicks anything else.
And even though it’s small, it does a big job.
Your bio helps parents quickly work out three things.
Is this account for me?
Is it for my child’s age?
And what should I do next?
Most parents don’t read bios word for word. They scan them. Very quickly. Often one-handed. Sometimes while holding a baby and trying to drink a hot coffee!
So your bio needs to be clear, simple and easy to understand at a glance.
Think of it like your shop window or your hello at the door. It sets expectations and builds confidence. If your bio is clear, parents feel reassured and are more likely to follow, click your link or send you a message. If it’s vague or confusing, they’ll usually move on, even if your classes are brilliant. That’s why your Instagram bio is such an important part of attracting the right families.
How parents are using Instagram right now
Parents are using Instagram like a search engine.
They are typing ‘key words’ like baby classes near me, toddler activities in their area, or something to do with a two year old. Instagram then looks at profiles and content and decides what to show them.
That means Instagram needs to understand who you are and what you do. And parents need to understand it too. Quickly.
If your bio is vague, or sounds nice but doesn’t really say anything, both Instagram and parents are going to struggle.
The first action is to take a look at your Name on Instagram
The name field on Instagram is searchable. Instagram actually reads it.
So if your name is just your brand name, that doesn’t give Instagram much context. And it doesn’t help parents who don’t know you yet.
What works much better is using that space to explain what you do and who you help.
So instead of just your business name, you might add something like baby and toddler classes, preschool sports sessions, or children’s activity classes in your area.
This helps parents find you when they are searching, and it also reassures them straight away that they are in the right place.
Make it really clear who you classes are for
Parents don’t want to guess. If they are not sure whether your class is right for their child’s age, they probably won’t click any further. So in your bio, be really clear about who your classes are for. Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school age children, or a combination. Say it plainly.
Words like little ones or young children sound friendly, but they are quite vague. Clear is always better.
When parents can see straight away that your class fits their child, they feel more confident and more likely to take the next step.
Say what you actually do and now just how it feels
A lot of bios talk about fun, confidence, magic and memories. And all of that is lovely. But parents also want to know what actually happens in your classes.
Are they sensory based? Are they structured? Are they energetic? Are they calm? Are they focused on development, movement, music or social skills?
You don’t need to explain everything. Just give parents enough information to picture it.
If they can imagine themselves and their child in your class, you are on the right track.
Don’t forget to say where you are based
This sounds obvious, but it gets missed all the time.
If you are a local activity provider, your location really matters. Parents are busy. They are not going to dig around to work out where you are based.
If your bio clearly says your town or area, parents can instantly decide if you are local to them. Instagram can also use that information to show your profile to nearby families.
Make your bio about your families and not about you
It is very tempting to use your bio to talk about your experience, your qualifications and how passionate you are. And those things do matter.
But parents are mainly thinking about their child and themselves.
They are wondering if their child will be welcomed, if they will feel comfortable, and if the class will fit into their life.
So try to write your bio in a way that shows you understand families like them. You can still include your experience, but frame it in a way that feels supportive and relevant.
Think about what happens after they click
Even if your bio is great, not every parent is ready to book straight away.
If your bio only pushes people straight to a booking page, you are relying on the timing being perfect. This is where having a simple follow up system really helps. Something that lets parents stay in touch with you until they are ready.
This is exactly why I created Capture & Convert- my 6 month programme.
Working with me you’ll set up a complete messaging system that captures attention on Instagram, builds an email list of local parents, and converts them into paying customers without being tied to social media.
You’ll go from juggling disconnected tools to running a joined-up system that actually fills your classes. Goodbye to procrastination and hello to action
Reminder: Your bio is just part of your Instagram strategy
Your Instagram bio isn’t there to do everything. It’s there to do one main job. Help the right parents understand what you offer and encourage them to take a small next step.
When your bio is clear, friendly and focused on families, Instagram becomes a lot easier to use and a lot more effective at targeting families and ideal customers.
It’s also worth remembering that your bio is just one part of the picture.
Instagram has lots of other features designed to help you get discovered and fill your classes. When all of these things work together, Instagram becomes much easier and much more effective.
If you’d like help putting that together, you can book Instagram training with me for you or your franchise network.
We’ll look at the key features of Instagram, your content and your next steps to convert your ideal customers as a whole, and I’ll show you simple, practical ways to attract more families and turn interest into bookings.
